Preparations for the 2026 UEC Road European Championships are entering their most intensive phase, with activity increasingly moving from planning to work on the ground. The competition and supporting venues for the biggest cycling event in Slovenia’s history are now beginning to take shape.
The 2026 UEC Road European Championships require extensive temporary infrastructure for riders, teams, media and guests. Installation will begin in mid-September with the VIP venue, followed by the logistics and media centres and dedicated areas for the national teams. In Šenčur alone, 35 fully equipped tents will be set up for the teams, while the media centre will provide 120 workstations for journalists. Infrastructure for television production will be put in place shortly before the Championships begin.
Behind everything that will be visible along the routes in October is an extensive organisational effort. More than 1,300 people are involved in preparing and delivering the Championships, including around 500 volunteers from Slovenia and abroad. The 12 municipalities through which the routes will pass are also preparing for the event with a range of activities and are expecting large numbers of spectators along the roads. Preparing and securing the routes remains a particular challenge – more than 850 people will be responsible for safety and the smooth running of the races, while approximately eight kilometres of barriers, ten kilometres of safety tape and four kilometres of safety rope will be installed.
Over the final weeks, the Championships will increasingly come to life ahead of 2 October, when riders, teams and spectators begin arriving. Then, the roads will belong to Europe’s best female and male cyclists, while everything happening alongside them will belong to those who come out to cheer them on.
