The Baroque Church of St George, built in 1747, is Šenčur’s principal cultural and architectural landmark. The town also takes its name from its patron saint. Inside, visitors can admire frescoes painted by Franc Jelovšek in 1750 and a painting of St George by Janez Šubic, while part of the former defensive wall built to protect the settlement against Ottoman raids remains preserved behind the church.

Church of St George
Monument to the Potato and Empress Maria Theresa
Thanks to its fertile fields and long tradition of potato cultivation, Šenčur is also known as the Land of Potatoes. In the centre of the town stands a monument to the potato and Empress Maria Theresa, erected in 2008 as a tribute to the crop that played an important role in the life, diet and identity of the local community.
Churches of St Radegund and St Catherine in Srednja Vas
Two picturesque Gothic churches stand side by side on the edge of Srednja Vas, with a shared bell tower rising between them. The 15th-century Church of St Radegund houses valuable Gothic frescoes dating from around 1440, while the younger Church of St Catherine features a beautifully preserved painted wooden ceiling. Numerous local stories and legends are also associated with the two churches.
Church of St Vitus in Visoko
The Baroque filial Church of St Vitus in Visoko, built in 1655, is one of the most recognisable religious landmarks in the Municipality of Šenčur. Its interior is distinguished by the high altar created by sculptor Janez Gregor Goetzl, while a painted 17th-century wayside shrine stands in front of the church.
Church of St Michael and the Ciril Pregelj Memorial Room
The Church of St Michael in Olševek was built in its present form in the 18th century, modelled on the church in Šenčur, although an earlier church on the site was already mentioned in 1333. The nearby Olševek Community Centre houses a memorial room dedicated to Ciril Pregelj, a composer, choirmaster and music teacher who was born in Olševek and made an important contribution to the development of Slovenian choral singing.
Hiša čez cesto Ethnological Collection
Hiša čez cesto in Milje preserves the rich ethnological and cultural heritage of rural life. Its collection includes old toys and dolls, prams, household utensils, farming tools and various models. Through folk singing, exhibitions and other events, the house remains a lively centre of local cultural activity.

Šenčur-Style Sautéed Potatoes
Sautéed potatoes are Šenčur’s best-known culinary speciality and a symbol of the area’s former importance as a major potato-growing region. They are traditionally prepared using a selected potato variety, pork fat, fried onions, salt and cracklings. Visitors can taste the dish at local events, particularly during the Potato Festival.
Šenčurska Godlja
Šenčurska godlja is a hearty traditional dish once prepared mainly during winter and at the time of pig slaughter. It is usually served with potatoes boiled in their skins. Its culinary heritage is preserved by the Šenčur Tourist Association through the annual Godlja Day, celebrating local flavours, homely traditions and community spirit.
Budelj or Prata
Budelj, also known as prata, is a traditional festive dish from the Gorenjska region, usually prepared by Šenčur households at Easter. A filling made from bread, cured meat and eggs is baked either in a casing or a baking dish and served as part of a rich Easter breakfast.

Lake Trboje
Lake Trboje was created in 1986 by damming the Sava River and is now the largest body of water in central Slovenia. Covering approximately one square kilometre and reaching depths of up to 17 metres, the lake provides a habitat for numerous waterbirds and is a popular destination for walking, nature watching, boating and other recreational activities.
Kokra River Educational Trail and Rapa Sports Park
The approximately two-kilometre educational trail between Visoko and Hotemaže introduces visitors to the natural beauty of the Kokra River, the geological diversity of its pebbles and the stories of people who once lived and worked along its banks. The trail begins at Rapa Sports Park, which offers football, tennis and boules facilities. Another special feature is a geological pyramid built from characteristic pebbles found in the Kokra River.
Milje Sports Park
Milje Sports Park is set in green surroundings beside the Kokra River. Visitors can use its volleyball court and boules area, while its peaceful location, unspoilt natural environment and proximity to the river make it a pleasant place for recreation, relaxation and outdoor socialising.
Srjanska Educational Trail
The Srjanska Educational Trail connects the natural and cultural heritage of Srednja Vas. It passes a water retention basin with a birdwatching hide, a landscaped park beside the Olševnica stream, the churches of St Radegund and St Catherine, and the wooded Srjanski Hrib. Along the way, visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding cultural landscape and Alpine peaks.
Hiking Trails to Apnišče
At 740 metres, Apnišče is the highest peak located entirely within the Municipality of Šenčur. Several trails lead to its wooded summit from Olševek, Možjanca, Velesovo and Adergas. A bench and summit stamp await hikers at the top, making it a popular destination for shorter hikes throughout the year.
Cycling across the Kranj Plain
The flat, low-traffic landscape of the Kranj Plain offers excellent opportunities for recreational and family cycling. Routes connect Šenčur with the surrounding villages, Lake Trboje, Kranj and the Alpine foothills, allowing cyclists to choose between shorter excursions and longer rides towards more demanding climbs.
Traditional Cycling Race
Šenčur’s long cycling tradition is celebrated each year with the Šenčur Grand Prix – Bojan Udovič Memorial. This exciting criterium race takes place along the streets of central Šenčur, bringing together competitive cycling, a lively sporting atmosphere and the local community.
