The 15th-century church is one of the most important monuments of Gothic architecture in Slovenia. Its bell tower rises 60 metres high, it is open to the public and has a magnificent view in all directions.

Prešeren’s House
The house was the home of France Prešeren, Slovenia’s greatest poet (1800–1849), during the last years of his life. It houses a memorial museum and a modern permanent exhibition of the poet’s original works and furniture from that time.

The greatest master of Sloveni-an architecture was active also in Kranj. His works here include the stairs and fountain at the south-ern city gate, the Bežek Villa and the façade of the Prešeren Theatre. In front of the theatre, visitors are greeted by the largest monument to the poet France Prešeren, which is five metres high.
Khislstein Castle
This Castle was once part of the city walls. Today, it houses the Gorenjska Museum, an open-air stage for concerts and theatre performances and the castle garden, which is also among Slovenia’s most beautiful venues for cultural events.
The Cabinet of Janez Puhar
Janez Puhar, the first Slovenian photographer and inventor of photography on glass, has a memorial museum in Kranj, where you will find various experiences, a room of moving pictures and a 19thcentury photographic studio.

Carniolan sausage
This sausage is one the most typical Slovenian dishes, from the region of Carniola that was named after Kranj and there is an interesting story from history to tell. When the Emperor Franz Joseph was travelling across Carniola, he was served these sausages by an innkeeper who was embarrassed that he was not able to offer anything more exquisite. But he enthusiastically exclaimed: “These are no ordinary sausages, these are the sausages of Carniola!”
Carniolan Beer
Nowadays, the sausage goes very well together with the local “Kranjsko pivo” beer and you can try this combination at the Kranjska Pivnica Brewpub. In 1818, it was named after the Duchy of Carniola and was brewed under this name for almost 100 years. Then it disappeared for almost a century and finally had its comeback with this Brewery and Brewpub of Kranj.

We highly recommend these strudels to people with a sweet tooth. The delicious and simple dessert can be prepared according to a recipe by Magdalena Knafelj Pleiweis from 1868.

Kokra River Canyon
Kranj stands on a cliff, towering over the 30-metredeep canyon of the Kokra River, the 2nd highest urban canyon in Europe. This unique natural attraction is a varied mosaic of aquatic and riparian biotopes. Walking the path through the green canyon in the middle of the city is a great opportunity to get some rest and relaxation in nature.
Tunnels under the old town
The 1300m of underground tunnels used to be a bomb shelter built during World War II and are now the venue for many cultural and culinary events. Take a guided tour, either traditional or digital, and discover this city’s glorious past.
SOS Proteus Information Centre
The mission of the centre is to raise awareness about the endangered cave amphibian called proteus or olm, and the importance of preserving subterranean sources of drinking water. On display are rescued olms that have been washed to the surface by groundwater floods, where they cannot survive. By visiting, you will be supporting the research and conservation of olms.
