Mengeš’s long history is still reflected in the preserved historic centres of Veliki and Mali Mengeš, which rank among the town’s important cultural landmarks. Over the centuries, Mengeš developed along the former Roman road Emona–Celeia, gradually growing from an agricultural settlement into an important centre of crafts and commerce. Today, the two historic centres remain among the most distinctive reminders of its past.

ATTRACTIONS
Historic Centres of Veliki and Mali Mengeš
Jable Castle
Jable Castle is one of the area’s most notable cultural and historical landmarks. Its distinctive architecture and frescoes depicting secular scenes by Franc Jelovšek give the castle particular artistic value. Today, its historic setting also serves a contemporary purpose, hosting concerts, seminars, weddings and other events.
Church of St Primož and Felician and the Medieval Stone Bridge
In Loka pri Mengšu, the Church of St Primus and Felician is one of the settlement’s most important cultural heritage sites and hosts the traditional Primož Evenings. The centre of the village is also home to a restored medieval stone bridge dedicated to St John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of bridges.
Stone Wells in Topole
The traditional character of Topole is complemented by two restored stone wells. One stands beside the Chapel of St Lucy at the foot of Pleša, while the other, known as Udam’s Well, is located in the centre of the village. Small but distinctive elements of local heritage, together with the preserved rural architecture they offer a glimpse into the area’s traditional way of life.
EXPERIENCES
Gobavica and the Mengeš Mountain Hut
Rising just above Mengeš, Gobavica is a popular excursion and recreational spot for locals and visitors alike. It is home to the Mengeš Mountain Hut, the lowest-altitude mountain hut in Slovenia, which is also certified as family-friendly. The climb rewards visitors with views of the surrounding landscape and, on a clear day, all the way to the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, the Karawanks and the Julian Alps.
Dobeno
Located on the eastern and south-eastern slopes of Rašica, Dobeno is a popular destination for day trips, known for its green surroundings, scenic views, tourist farms, and hiking and cycling trails. The area forms part of a karst landscape and is also home to several caves, including Kraljeva jama.
Pleša and Views over the Mengeš Plain
Rising above Topole, the 365-metre-high Pleša offers views across the Mengeš Plain towards Kamnik and the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. A visit to the cultural sights of Topole can therefore easily be combined with a short outing and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Mengeš on Two Wheels
The flat landscape of the Mengeš Plain and the more varied terrain of its surroundings offer plenty of opportunities to explore the municipality by bicycle. Routes lead through nearby villages and towards Dobeno, Jable and other neighbouring destinations. Cyclists can choose between shorter, easy routes suitable for family outings and longer, more varied rides for more experienced cyclists.
